Spoiler 1: My Brother Spoils Harry Potter
**Spoiler Alert** Harry Potter book 5 spoilers ahead.
I was reading my way through the 4th Harry Potter book when the 5th one came out. The big news was, someone important was going to die in the end. There were lots of guesses, but no one really knew who it was until you read the book. I swore a solemn oath to punch in the face anyone who spoiled the ending of the 5th book for me.
My brother was ahead of me in the series, and read the book right after it came out. He knew where I was in the series, and had heard my admonitions. But one morning while relaxing on the couch and idly chatting with my wife, he said, “Hear’s a trivia question: Do you know who killed Serious Black?”
I punched him in the face.
Spoiler 2: My Mother Spoils Harry Potter (Again)
**Spoiler Alert** Harry Potter book 6 spoilers ahead.
I was reading my way through the 6th Harry Potter book when the 7th one came out. The big news was, someone important was going to die. There were lots of guesses, but no one really knew who it was until you read the book. I had given up swearing oaths to punch people.
One morning while chatting idly with my mother, conjecturing about the 7th book, I said, “I can’t see her [Rowling] killing Harry Potter. Maybe Dumbledore, or even Ron, but not Harry. My mother replied, “Isn’t Dumbledore already dead?”
Spoiler 3: I spoil the Red Wedding
**Spoiler Alert** Game of Thrones Book 3/ Season 3 spoilers ahead.
I was at Comic-Con in San Diego. We had just left the Game of Thrones panel, and walked out onto the exhibit hall floor to see a scheduled appearance of the GoT cast at the HBO booth.
Season 2 was done, but for once I wasn’t worried about spoilers because I had read through the 3rd book, and was completely caught up. A massive crowd gathered around as one by one, the cast made their way out onto an elevated platform to the cheers and adoration of their fans. Among them was Rob Stark actor Richard Madden.
I shouted out, “Don’t go to the wedding.” My friend looked at me with the very same expression I myself had worn twice before. “I just started the chapter with the wedding,” he said.
I knew his pain.
